It’s that time again when we look at the new, exciting, and upcoming releases in the world of comic books in our June 2021 Solicitations. Though these titles are listed in June they’ll come out in August. And I’m completely full with Batman. That sounded weird.
Black Panther – Marvel Comics
John Ridley, John Ridley, and John Ridley. Must I say more? Well okay.
I jumped off the current Avengers right after BP was getting the leadership role. And I gotta say I missed him. So as John Ridley is obviously not DC exclusive when I heard he was jumping on the typewriter with this book AND with a new #1 behind it, I said Wakanda forever.
I am Batman #0 – DC Comics
Anyone seeing a common thread here?
But in all seriousness I’m loving this little nugget that came out of Future State. Ridley’s really injecting some newness and is freshening this thing up. The trials and conflicts these characters are enduring, both physically and emotionally, is incredibly fascinating…and relatable. It’s something new, refreshing, and…yes it’s more Batman. We can’t get away from this guy.
Superman vs. Lobo – DC Comics
If any one of you grew up with Superman in the 90’s you know all about the main man. He was pretty much a fan favorite back then and honestly I haven’t really read much about him since I jumped back into comics. I understand there was a weird Emo version from Cullen Bunn and I believe he was a member of the Justice League of America book at some point…but that’s about it.
So when DC announced a Black Label book called Superman vs. Lobo it’s a no-brainer.
Thank you for making it as easy as possible for me DC Marketing.
Batman Fear State: Alpha – DC Comics
Okay so I loved Future State. Which means I want to see how it happened. I think it was one of the better things to come out in the world of superhero comics recently. Future State is not a What If, it’s cannon. It’s actually happened…or rather it’s happening.
Besides, these diverse creators that jumped onto these storylines ended up delivering some really interesting stuff and themes…all in a not-to-distant, totally believable future.
I think one of the big factors for me is that if DC were to put out a 2000AD like comic line, then Future State is it.
And speaking of 2000AD…
Hershey Disease – TP – Rebellion
A trade paperback made the list! A TP! Whoop!
But really, pick up this collected volume, even if you were along for the ride during the weekly progs. Because the book is incredibly well written and it’s gorgeous.
When Hershey died we knew she wasn’t dead. As another British superhero has said on many occasions, “A game’s afoot!”
And boy was it.
Rob Williams and Simon Fraser nailed down the thought experiment. What would happen to a former Chief Judge if she was banished to the outside world. Who would she meet and how would she act? And you get one violent, gritty, spaghetti western event that really put the thrill in thrill-power.
I guess you could argue that the Megazine is more of the book for the mature audiences these days. But with Hershey being one of the five stories, it made that time incredibly riveting. And it forced you to look forward to that weekly drop in your mailbox from week to week. I want more of this and yes, we are getting it.
